Metal Fence Posts — Buying and Repair Guide

Metal fence posts — also called steel fence posts — are what you use when the posts are the part of the fence that keeps failing. Wood twists, cups, splits and rots at the ground line, and that is what eventually pulls a fence out of square. Our universal post is heavy-gauge galvanized steel, true 4" x 4", flat faced on all four sides, with a removable reinforced steel cap. It is made in Canada and carries a 40-year warranty against corrosion.

Replacing or fixing a rotted fence post

There are two honest answers to a failing post, and we sell both.

Replace it with steel. A universal metal fence post takes wood-framed panels as readily as steel ones, so you can keep the fence you have and change only the part that rotted. Because the post is flat faced on all four sides, the same post works at a line, corner, end or T-junction — there is nothing to sort on site and nothing to order twice.

Or protect the wood you are keeping. The GroundLine post rot protection sleeve seals the ground-line zone where decay actually starts, using a heat-shrink outer shell over an inner butyl seal. It slides on before the post is set, takes about a minute with a heat gun, fits 3" to 8" round or square wood posts, and is warranted 20 years against ground-line rot. Capping the top matters too: galvanized post caps stop water pooling on the end grain, which is the second place posts fail.

Fixing panels to the post

The four flat faces are the point. Brackets and U-channel sets mount directly without packing or shimming, and the removable cap lets you set the post deeper and still finish at the height you wanted — useful on a slope or a stepped run.

Choosing a post length

Size the post by fence height plus burial depth. The working rule is roughly a third of the post in the ground.

Frost depth in your region may call for more, so check it before you dig. Setting below the frost line is what stops a post heaving back out over a winter.

Steel or wood?

Pressure treated and cedar posts are cheaper up front and are the right call when you want the whole fence to be timber. Steel costs more at the start and then stops being a maintenance item — it will not twist, cup, split or rot, and the galvanizing, not the finish colour, is what protects it. Most people who switch do so after replacing the same two or three posts twice.
