Our hog wire fence panels are the same rigid welded steel grid. Choose the 4" x 4" wire opening for a trellis — it is wide enough to reach through and pick, and it is the least expensive of the four.

Description

Cattle Panel Trellis

The cattle panel is the best trellis most gardeners ever use, and it was never designed to be one. It is a rigid welded grid — no sag under a loaded vine, no re-tensioning every spring, and a 4-inch opening that is wide enough to reach a hand through and pick.

What to grow on it

Cucumbers — the classic. Fruit hangs straight and stays clean off the soil.
Tomatoes — indeterminate vines clip straight to the grid, no cages.
Pole beans and peas — they self-climb; you do nothing.
Small squash and melons — sling the heavy fruit, the panel carries it.

Flat trellis or arch

A flat vertical panel mounts against a wall, on posts, or spanning two raised beds. The garden arch is a different build: it takes one long 16 ft livestock panel bent into a hoop, which is not a size we make — our panels top out at 8 ft. For an arch, source a 16 ft cattle panel locally. For every other trellis use, a rigid welded panel is the better product.

Sizing

Cucumbers and beans want at least 5 ft of climb. Tomatoes do well at 4 to 5 ft. Between two raised beds, measure the outside-to-outside span and take the next size up.

❓ FAQ

Can I use a cattle panel as a trellis?
It is one of the best trellises there is. A rigid welded grid carries a loaded vine without sagging, needs no re-tensioning, and the 4-inch opening is wide enough to reach a hand through and pick.

Which mesh opening is best for a trellis?
The 4" x 4". It is wide enough to reach through, easy for tendrils to grab, and it is the least expensive of the four openings.

How tall should a trellis be?
Cucumbers and pole beans want at least 5 feet of climb. Tomatoes do well at 4 to 5 feet. Between two raised beds, measure outside-to-outside and take the next size up.

Can I make an arch from these?
Not from ours. A garden arch is one 16 ft livestock panel bent into a hoop, and our panels top out at 8 feet on the long side. For an arch, buy a 16 ft cattle panel from a farm supplier.
